fomo and taxes: every trade is a disposal
the surprise is never the rate. it is the volume — a strategy that felt like « i followed one guy » turns out to be eleven hundred disposals when the year ends.
this is the least exciting page on this blog and probably the one that saves the most money. it is also not tax advice — rules differ by country and by your circumstances, and the point here is to make sure you know what you are carrying before you talk to someone who does file it.
the rule that surprises people
in most jurisdictions crypto is treated as property rather than currency. the consequence is that every swap is a disposal of the thing you swapped out of, whether or not any real money moved and whether or not you withdrew anything.
so selling CATE for USDC is a disposal. swapping CATE directly for BULL is also a disposal of CATE, at its market value at that moment, even though you never touched a dollar. your account balance did not change in a way you would notice. your tax position did.
in the united states specifically there is no de minimis exemption for crypto. a $12 swap is as reportable as a $12,000 one. that single fact is what turns a memecoin habit into a filing problem.
copy trading multiplies the count
here is the arithmetic nobody runs before starting.
you are not choosing the trade frequency when you copy. the person you follow is. an active fomo leader can open several positions a day, and each position is at least two disposals — one in, one out — before partial exits are counted.
none of these are large numbers of dollars. they are large numbers of lines. and the work of filing scales with lines, not with dollars, which is why people who made almost nothing still end up paying an accountant several hundred to sort it out.
what to export, and when
two paths, and they are not exclusive:
- from the app. fomo can generate tax documents directly, which is the fastest route if fomo is the only place you trade.
- through a crypto tax service. integrations exist that sync your fomo history, track cost basis across wallets, and produce the actual forms — form 8949 in the us. this is the right path if you also hold crypto anywhere else, because cost basis has to be tracked across all of it, not per-app.
the timing advice is worth more than the tool choice: do this monthly. the data is on-chain and will not disappear, but matching hundreds of memecoin lots, working out which of two tokens with similar tickers you actually sold, and remembering why you moved something between wallets is dramatically easier at thirty days than at fifteen months.
cost basis is where it actually goes wrong
the disposals are the easy part. the number that determines what you owe is the cost basis, and copy trading attacks it from two directions.
partial exits. the trader you follow sells 30% of a position. which 30% of your holding did that dispose of — the earliest lot, the latest, an average? your jurisdiction has an answer and your records need to match it. get this inconsistent across a year and the whole return is unreliable.
multiple entries into the same token. a leader who adds to a position three times gives you three lots at three prices in one ticker. that is fine and normal. it is also the exact input that manual spreadsheets get wrong.
this is the concrete argument for exporting from a tool rather than reconstructing by hand. not that it is easier — that it is correct.
four things worth doing now
- export this month's history before you read anything else. if it is already painful at one month, it will be unrecoverable at twelve.
- keep one wallet for copying. mixing copied trades with long-term holdings in the same address makes cost basis far harder to defend. separation costs nothing up front.
- size with the tax in mind. a strategy that is marginally profitable pre-tax and generates two thousand disposals is usually not worth running. this is a reason to prefer copying a trader who holds for days over one who scalps, independent of returns.
- find out your jurisdiction's rule on losses. whether losses carry forward, and whether wash-sale style rules apply to crypto where you live, changes the answer to « should i realise this loss in december » completely.
the fee side of the same equation is at what fomo's fees actually cost, and the frequency question — which trader, how often — is at which fomo traders are worth copying.
frequently asked
do i pay tax on fomo trades?
in most jurisdictions, yes, and on each trade rather than on your ending balance. crypto is usually treated as property, so swapping token a for token b is a disposal of a even though no currency was involved and nothing was withdrawn. the us in particular has no de minimis exemption, so a $12 swap is as reportable as a $12,000 one.
how do i get my fomo transaction history?
the app can generate tax documents directly, and third-party crypto tax services integrate with fomo to sync history, track cost basis and produce the forms your filing needs — form 8949 in the us. do this monthly rather than in april: the wallet is self-custodial and on-chain, so the data will still be there, but reconstructing intent and matching lots across hundreds of memecoins a year later is genuinely miserable.
does copy trading create more tax than trading myself?
it creates as many disposals as the person you copy makes trades, which is usually far more than you would make on your own. that is the entire point of automating it, and it is also the part nobody plans for. copying one active leader can easily produce four figures of taxable events in a year.
can i deduct my losses?
in many jurisdictions capital losses offset capital gains, and memecoin trading produces plenty of both. the rules on carrying losses forward, on wash sales, and on whether trading counts as investment or business income vary enormously by country. this page is not tax advice and you should take the export to someone who files in your jurisdiction.
stop reading. start copying.
pick a trader from the fomo leaderboard, set your size, and the entries and the exits land in your own wallet while you sleep.
