take profit and stop loss on copied trades

copying a trader's exits keeps you in step with them. your own take profit and stop loss are what protect you when their plan and yours stop being the same thing.

take profit and stop loss in copy trading are your own exits, independent of the trader you copy. on copyfomo you can ladder up to three take profit rungs (+50%, +100%, +300% or custom, selling 25% to all at each), set a stop loss at -25%, -50%, -80% or custom, and move the stop to breakeven once a rung fires.

they are off by default. that is deliberate: a copy mirrors your trader's exits already, and adding your own is a choice about where your plan differs from theirs. this page is about making that choice on purpose.

why add your own exits at all

if your trader's sells are mirrored, why set anything? three reasons.

  • their plan is sized for them. a trader holding through a -60% drawdown may be fine at their size. at yours, that might be a week of copying gone.
  • the move is short. we timed 29 first buys from a large fomo wallet: median +39% one minute after the leader's fill, +43% at fifteen minutes, most given back by sixty. past moves do not predict future ones, but a take profit is how you keep part of a spike your trader chose to ride through.
  • you may hold what they left. with "hold when i'm down", or after you stop copying someone, the position has no trader managing it. copying a fomo trader's exits explains when that happens.

take profit: the ladder

a take profit fires when the price is up a set amount over your entry, without waiting for anyone. copyfomo lets you ladder up to three rungs:

rungtriggersells
1+50%, +100%, +300% or custom25%, 50%, 75% or all
2a higher levelanother share
3a higher level againanother share, or nothing (moonbag)

a common shape: sell 75% at +300% and let 25% ride to +1000%. or leave the last piece with no ceiling at all. whatever you leave unassigned has no take profit, but it stays under your stop loss.

the trade-off is simple. early rungs lock in more often and cap your upside on the rare runner. late rungs catch the runner and fire less often. a ladder is a way of not having to pick one.

stop loss: a backstop, not a floor

a stop loss sells all of what is left once the price is down a set distance from your entry: -25%, -50%, -80%, or custom. two things are worth knowing before you rely on one.

it guarantees an attempt, not a price. on a token with thin liquidity the sell goes into whatever bids exist, and memecoins gap. a -25% stop can fill a lot lower. how stop losses behave on memecoins covers the mechanics.

tight stops get hit by noise. these tokens move 30% in minutes in both directions. a stop tight enough to feel safe will fire on ordinary volatility and take you out before the move. many copy traders use a wide stop, like -50% or -80%, as protection against the collapse rather than as a precise exit.

when a take profit and a stop loss would both trigger, the stop wins. protection comes first.

breakeven after take profit

the third setting decides what your stop becomes once a take profit rung has fired:

  • breakeven (default): the stop on the rest moves up to your entry. what is left cannot turn into a loss on paper. a pullback to your entry closes it.
  • keep my stop: the rest stays under your original stop. more room to breathe, more room to give back.

breakeven pairs naturally with an early first rung. take a piece at +50% or +100%, and the rest becomes a free ride that either runs or closes flat.

three setups to start from

take something home50% at +100%-50%breakeven
ladder with a moonbag50% at +100%, 25% at +300%, rest open-50%breakeven

these are starting points, not recommendations for your account. none of them makes a memecoin less risky, and any of them can lose money on a token that gaps straight through the stop. the wider context for choosing each value is in every fomo copy trading setting explained.

the rules that trip people up

  • per trader or everywhere. set inside a trader's copy flow, take profit and stop loss belong to that trader. set from /settings, they apply to all of them.
  • changes are retroactive. changing either one applies to everything you already hold, not only to your next trade.
  • copied positions only. a token you bought yourself, from a pasted contract or an alert, is yours to sell from /portfolio. if you add to a token you already copy, the whole position stays covered.
  • pause pauses them too. the kill switch stops take profit and stop loss with everything else. they come back the moment you resume.
  • stopping a copy does not. stop copying a trader and the position stays, still under your own take profit and stop loss.
  • reset clears them. reset defaults in /settings puts your guards back and clears take profit and stop loss.
no setting removes the risk. take profit and stop loss shape how a position ends, not whether the token survives. memecoins can go to zero between two checks.

copyfomo is independent and not affiliated with fomo, and every value above is listed in the docs. the take profit, stop loss and after-tp questions come near the end of the copy flow in @copyfomo_bot, and the last screen shows everything you chose before anything is armed.

frequently asked

should i use a stop loss when copy trading?

usually yes, as a backstop rather than a precise exit. a stop loss sells what is left once the price falls a set distance below your entry, whatever your trader does. on thin memecoins it guarantees an attempt to sell, not the price, so the fill can land well below the level. it matters most if you hold positions your trader has already left.

what is a take profit ladder?

a take profit ladder sells your position in pieces at rising targets instead of all at once. on copyfomo you can set up to three rungs, for example sell 50% at +100% and 25% at +300%, and leave the rest with no ceiling as a moonbag. whatever you leave unassigned has no take profit but stays under your stop loss.

what does breakeven after take profit mean?

once one take profit rung has fired, the stop loss on the rest of the position moves up to your entry price. what is left can then no longer turn into a loss on paper, though a fast drop can still fill below it. the trade-off is that a normal pullback to your entry closes the remainder. on copyfomo it is the default after a take profit.

what happens if take profit and stop loss trigger at the same time?

on copyfomo the stop loss wins. when both would trigger, protection comes first and what is left is sold under the stop. this can happen on very fast candles where the price spikes and collapses between checks, which is common on young memecoins. it is a deliberate choice: missing some upside costs less than letting a position that is already falling slip further.

do take profit and stop loss apply to all traders i copy?

it depends where you set them. set inside a trader's copy flow, they belong to that trader only. set from /settings, they apply to every trader you copy. changing either one applies to everything you already hold, not only to your next trade, and they cover copied positions rather than tokens you bought by hand.

stop reading. start copying.

pick a trader from the fomo leaderboard, set your size, and the entries and the exits land in your own wallet while you sleep.
